The European Union announced on June 29 that 10 cell phone companies have agreed to produce phones that will all be compatible with a single charger in order to reduce electronic waste.
Avoiding legislative action, the companies, which include Apple (maker of the iPhone), Texas Instruments, Motorola, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion (RIM; maker of the BlackBerry), Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia, have entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that states that beginning in 2010 the companies will only sell mobile phones that are chargeable by a standardized micro-USB port. The EU hopes the agreement will not only have a positive environmental impact but that it will also be more convenient for cell phone consumers.
